PAGE COUNTY-PROJECT CLOVER Lee's position..... “I HAVE HEARD ENOUGH” After the EDA meeting the other day I came out wondering if it could be true…the blind are leading the blind. It is indeed baffling to me how this whole project got wings and took off, all this time I have only been talking about flying cars but projects flying???? I’m beginning to wonder, and become skeptical about the motives driving this idea of a business park/industrial park/hidden agenda, or whatever it is. Like I said I left that meeting after hearing enough non-specific double talk. All this time I thought I could spin a good yarn. I never heard a word about how the taxpayer would not be paying for this fiasco! I never heard a word about who was coming C.I.F. {cash in fist} to buy a piece of this county pie. I did leave wondering how I would be explaining to the voters in the coming days whether or not I opposed or agreed with the park. I heard enough to know this is a bad deal for the taxpayer if we have to foot the bill for the county pie. As it was pointed out to me, we have already taken a big bite of the pie, a one million dollar bite. That is just about enough pie to choke on if you ask me. Please, no ala mode. Once again I will say I am against this project if we as taxpayers have to pay for the pie and give away slices to lure in the unsuspecting occupants like spiders waiting for a fly to land on the web. I am still bewildered as to why the Page County Virginia board of supervisors agreed to give away land for a business to come here. Maureen and I were never offered land for our herb farm to expand. After my son graduated with a degree in IT from JMU, he was not offered any land for a start up data center. I personally have never met anyone who was just given carte blanche (a blank check) for county (taxpayer) money and/or land. I guess I’ve just been running in the wrong circles, or barking up the wrong tree. Maybe I’ ve been looking the wrong way or swimming up stream against the tide. It just seems like we the citizens of Page County Virginia have been held down so long that everything looks like it is up to us. It is time for us to take a stand. The election is only days away, we can clean half the house this time and the other half in 2 years. Before I can support this fiasco I need a whole lot more information. I want the taxpayers to share in this information and understand this information. Specifically, I want to know the logic behind giving away taxpayer money and land with out the taxpayer authorizing the dollars out the door? I want to know where the money to pay for the data center and development is coming from, who is going to pay it back and how? I want to know why the railroad needs to have this land pre-zoned industrial? Is it the matter of right clause in the zoning ordinance that they need for industrial development? I want to know why this had to be done by the back door route, all hush-hush style, with no citizen input are we all rabble to them? Why can’t we be trusted? Why are they so smart that they know everything and we know nothing? I take issue with that because I know that we are smart enough to vote and change things!!! I think I figured out why they have acted the way they have. One of their consultants must be illusionist and used smoke and mirrors to convince them that we are all taxpayer ostriches with our heads buried in the sand. He must have made them believe that we would be so easily fooled that they can do what ever they want and we will never pull our heads out of that dirt to see what they were up to. A couple of things I know about and am waiting to tell, so I am holding those cards close to my chest. This first card is the Pennsylvania railroad card. That railroad is a part of the Cresent Corridor rail line that runs partly through Page County Virginia. Some of the land that the railroad owns along the line in towns in New Jersy and Pennsylvania is located on very high dollar real estate and some of the industries located in those high dollar real estate areas could easily be relocated by the railroad to other areas providing jobs and industry where ever they get relocated. The caveat is that the railroad wants a public/private partnership where ever they relocate any industry. They are also not ready to begin the relocation process at this time so all they are doing is setting the table, so to speak. Once the table is set and everything is ready, in place, and it looks like they can make their move they will begin their planned passing line build out. They told me that will not be for 3 to 5 years sometime around 2012 or so. So if the railroad in not in a hurry and PTS is not ready to begin the data center and no other occupants are on the horizon, I’m having a hard time figuring out what the problem is? Why is the EDA is such a HURRY? Just what is the rush? Who exactly is going to benifit? What is the hidden agenda? Why throw caution to the wind? Doesn’t the EDA understand the saying haste makes waste? I just do not have enough information and I do not think any one else outside their loop has enough information and maybe, just maybe, some of those in the loop don’t even have enough information to make a rational decision! If we were given an honest answer and honest information maybe we would or could agree with the board, maybe not. As it stands right now I can not go with innuendo, insinuation, incredulous information, allegation, or nearly anything that the EDA says to the public in open session based on what I heard the other day. I’m beginning to wonder what it is that they do in closed session. Yes “I have heard enough” to say “NO, NO, NO” for now. To bad I don’t have a vote right now…but YOU DO! Please, VOTE on NOV 3rd. A vote for Lee is a vote for Lee. Thank you for your time and God Bless. Lee McWhorter |
